Some scholars of the New Testament suggest that the name "Judas" was intended as an attack on the Judaeans or on the Judaean religious establishment held responsible (mistakenly) for executing Christ. The Kingdom of Judah is the origin of the words Judeans, Judas, and Jews. "Judas" is the Greek form of the common Hebrew name Judah (יהודה, meaning "praised"). There is no 'Canon of the Damned', nor any official proclamation of the damnation of Judas. The Vatican only proclaims individuals' Eternal Salvation through the Canon of Saints. Furthermore, the Roman Catholic Church has never officially stated that it believes Judas is in Hell for his actions. Gnostic texts actually praise Judas for his role in triggering humanity's alleged salvation, and view Judas as the best of the Apostles. Judas' betrayal, for instance, set in motion the events that lead to Jesus' Crucifixion and Resurrection, which, according to traditional Christian theology, brought salvation to humanity.
Despite his notorious role in the Gospel narratives, Judas is still somewhat of an ambivalent figure in Christian history.
